- Latics sign Oxford United striker Will Goodwin on loan
- The powerful forward links up with Shaun Maloney’s men for the remainder of the 2024/25 season
- Goodwin played in Sky Bet League One for Cheltenham Town and Oxford United last term, helping the U’s win promotion to the Sky Bet Championship
Wigan Athletic have continued their fast-paced start to the January transfer window, securing the services of Oxford United striker Will Goodwin who joins on loan for the remainder of the season.
Goodwin, (22), becomes Latics’ third acquisition of the winter window, following the permanent signings of Josh Robinson and Joe Hungbo.
The frontman began his career with Chester at the age of nine, before signing for Stoke City in February 2021.
Productive loan spells with Hartlepool United and Torquay United preceded a permanent move to Cheltenham Town in January 2023, where he enjoyed his breakthrough in the EFL.
Having made 12 Sky Bet League One appearances for the Robins following his arrival, Goodwin grasped his opportunity to shine in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign. The powerful striker netted six goals in 16 appearances, leading the line superbly and showcasing his astute aerial ability and physical attributes.
His outstanding form resulted in a move to Oxford United in January 2024, and Goodwin played his part in helping the U’s reach the Sky Bet Championship for the first time in 25 years.
After recovering from an injury sustained in pre-season, Goodwin has featured three times in the second tier this term and will now head to the Brick Community Stadium for the rest of the season.
Goodwin said: “I am buzzing, and really excited to be here. When I found out Wigan were an option, it was a no-brainer for me to come here.
“I spoke to Scott (Smith) who I played with at Torquay United and he sold the club to me. The club also sells itself with its size and history, and it was a big factor as to why I wanted to come here and be part of it.
“I’ve had a good chat with the manager (Shaun Maloney), who has spoken to me about the club and his philosophies. He wants me to come in and score goals. That’s definitely the plan, and hopefully, I can help the team climb the table.”
Maloney said: “Will is another player we have been tracking for some time, and I’m delighted he’s decided to join us.
“He already has experience in League One and is the type of character we want in the dressing room. He has different attributes to our other forward players and adds a new dynamic to our frontline.”
Sporting director Gregor Rioch added: “Will is an exciting striker and is one that I am really looking forward to seeing in action in a Wigan Athletic shirt.
“I’d like to thank Oxford United for their help in facilitating the move and wish Will all the best during his time with us.”
