Wigan Athletic have signed exciting forward Joe Hungbo from German side 1.FC Nürnberg for an undisclosed fee, subject to EFL and FA approval and international clearance.
Hungbo, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Brick Community Stadium, becomes Shaun Maloney’s second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of Josh Robinson from Arsenal on New Year’s Day.
The 24-year-old spent his formative years with Premier League side Crystal Palace before arriving at Watford in the summer of 2019.
After making his professional debut for the Hornets against Tranmere Rovers in January 2020, Hungbo gained experience out on loan with National League outfit Aldershot Town and Scottish Premiership side Ross County, enjoying a successful stay with the latter in 2021/22.
Hungbo was a shining light for the Staggies, scoring seven times in 33 matches. He was named County’s young player of the season, players’ player of the year and captured the goal-of-the-season award for a stunning free kick against Dundee.
The 2022/23 campaign saw Hungbo further enhance his professional development in the Sky Bet Championship, playing seven times for Watford before heading to Huddersfield Town for another invaluable loan spell.
The winger showcased his flair and prowess at the John Smith’s Stadium, scoring three times in 14 all-action appearances, impressing with his dangerous and direct running.
His form alerted the attention of Bundesliga 2 outfit 1. FC Nürnberg who secured the services of the pacey wide man in July 2023. He featured on 17 occasions in the German second tier, helping them finish in 12th place.
Hungbo returned to England last summer to join Latics’ League One counterparts Rotherham United, making 18 appearances across all competitions at the AESSEAL New York Stadium with his penultimate outing coming against Latics on Boxing Day.
Hungbo has now agreed to permanently link up with Latics ahead of the second half of the season, having been excited by the prospect of being part of the club’s rebuild. He adds further strength to the club’s attacking options.
Hungbo, who will wear the 44 shirt number, said: “I can’t wait to get started. I’ve heard some really good things, and the manager has been one of my admirers in terms of his philosophy.
“Everyone goes through a phase where they’re trying to find a club to see if it clicks, and I definitely feel like this is the club for me. All the boxes are ticked, and everything is set up for me to do what I need to do. Hopefully I can produce for the football club.
“I am an entertainer. I like to get at defenders and make the crowd jump out of their seats. I feel that the philosophy and playing style will bring out the good attributes that I have.”
Maloney said: “We are very happy to have signed Joe on a permanent deal. Joe can play on either side of our front line which is a big asset for us. He excels in one-on-one situations and will bring speed and creativity to our attacking play.
“He has gained good experience in England, Scotland, and Germany during his career so far. I’m looking forward to Joseph integrating into our team and showing his work ethic and talent.”
Sporting director Gregor Rioch added: “Joe is a young and exciting player who we believe will be a brilliant addition to our squad.
“We have been tracking Joe closely over the past few years and are delighted he’s decided to start the next chapter of his career with our football club.”
