Manchester United 4, Everton 0
Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee each scored a brace as Manchester United put Everton to the sword at Old Trafford.
It was just the tonic both players needed as Rashford moved onto 7 goals for the season while Zirkzee scored his first goals since the opening day of the season to take his tally up to three as the Ruben Amorim revolution gathered pace with his first Premier League win.
And it was all the more remarkable that Amorim won his first home Premier League game by a four goal margin – something that Erik Ten Hag never managed to achieve.
United started well but could not fully expose Jordan Pickford who was saved several times in the first half by interventions from Reds target Jarrad Branthwaite.
It was end to end stuff at Old Trafford as Everton sensed a chance to upset the Reds.
Beto came close a couple of times, his best chance was hit into the side netting after getting clear of Andre Onana.
But United managed to get ahead after Bruno Fernandes’ corner was volleyed goalwards by Marcus Rashford with Jordan Pickford wrongfooted by a deflection off the luckless Jarrad Branthwaite.
Fernandes could have scored himself but for a clearance by Pickford but the Everton goalkeeper was nowhere to be found when Fernandes unselfishly picked out Joshua Zirkzee from 12 yards out and the Dutch forward was overjoyed to put the Reds into a 2-0 lead.
Marcus Rashford then put the Reds 3-0 up 20 seconds in the second half as Everton lost the ball from their own kick off an Joshua Zirkzee released Amad Diallo for a lung busting run into Everton territory before setting up the striker to score inside the near post.
But the United sloppiness remained as they gave up two dangerous free kicks, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw came on for Mathijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in the first changes of the afternoon.
And it wasn’t long before United effectively won the game with their fourth goal – Amad Diallo turning defence into attack courtesy of a couple of Everton errors as he galloped up field and unselfishly squared the ball for Joshua Zirkzee to score his second goal of the game after 64 minutes.
With the game effectively over and Everton fans leaving early, Alejandro Garnacho and Manuel Ugarte came on to give Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro a break as the Reds saw out the win and jumped up to 9th place in the league with a positive goal difference.
PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester United 4, Everton 0
Andre Onana: 7. Early save from Jesper Lindstrom. Did his bit putting Beto off and sending him wide and also saved from Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the end of the game.
Noussair Mazraoui: 7. Had his hands full watching Iliman Ndiaye but also looked comfortable passing out of defence.
Mathijs De Ligt: 7. Last line of defence, kept Beto quiet.
Lisandro Martinez: 7. Not afraid of a long pass from the back, booked for cynical foul on Beto.
Amad Diallo: 9. Plenty of excitement and work rate down his flank, close to unplayable. Snatched at a chance laid on by Joshua Zirkee. Drew Jordan Pickford out of his goal but could not pick out a team mate with a cut back for an easy chance. Harried Jarrad Branthwaite off the ball for the second goal and set up Marcus Rashford for United’s third before doing the same for Joshua Zirkzee. Penalty claim turned down after he went over after Abdoulaye Doucoure tried to get the ball off him in the Everton area.
Casemiro: 7. Effective shield, stopped Dwight McNeil
Kobbie Mainoo: 7. Early shot saved by Jordan Pickford. Helped Casemiro mop up what little cohesive attacks came from Everton.
Diogo Dalot: 7. Stayed high on the left and almost benefited from long ball up from Lisandro Martinez. Mistake allowed Beto a shot on goal though.
Bruno Fernandes: 8. Started on the left of a front three, his corner to Marcus Rashford was converted by the forward via a deflection off Jarrad Branthwaite. Denied a goal of his own after Jordan Pickford came out of his area to clear the bouncing ball but set up Joshua Zirkzee.
Marcus Rashford: 8. Initially stuck on the right flank where he didn’t look effective, looked a lot happier when on the left and stroked in the opener from 16 yards via a Jarrad Branthwaite deflection after Everton failed to clear Bruno Fernandes’ corner. Scored his second early in the second half, a near post drive after hard work from Amad Diallo.
Joshua Zirkzee: 8. Dropped deep to link up the play and created a good chance for Amad in the first half. Very happy to score after Bruno Fernandes unselfishly set him up and in the second half he started the move which was ended by Marcus Rashford. And Amad Diallo set him up for his second strike after the break.
Harry Maguire (on for Mathijs De Ligt, 56): 6. Dealt with Dominic Calvert-Lewin after he came on.
Luke Shaw (on for Noussair Mazraoui, 56): 6. Cleared an Everton cross shortly after coming on.
Alejandro Garnacho (for Bruno Fernandes, 66): 6. Drew a foul on Ashley Young right away as he looked to break on Everton. Tried to get on the scoresheet himself.
Manuel Ugarte (on for Casemiro, 66): 6. Slotted right into midfield.
Mason Mount (on for Kobbie Mainoo, 80): No time to mark
