STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 3, WITTON ALBION 0
Stalybridge Celtic’s third straight win in Pitching In Northern Premier League, Premier against Witton Albion was far removed to their previous two victories.
After the thrilling triumphs against Hednesford and Chasetown – both had dramatic twists in 4-3 successes which had everyone on the seat of their pants – this was an altogether more sedate encounter.
Celtic were in control throughout and emerged emphatic victors with new manager Jon Macken – facing the club he left early in the season – describing it as a “routine performance”.
“There was not anything in terms of an attacking threat from Witton,” said Macken.
“It felt comfortable, though they had a great early effort which brought a fantastic save from Charlie [Monks].
“A bit of a negative, but in a positive way, was we had opportunities to score more goals and that is something we could have done better.”
After conceding three goals in each of the two previous wins, Macken was also delighted with the first clean sheet in the nine games since he took charge at Bower Fold.
“Sometimes you take them for granted, but there is no denying just how important they also are,” continued.
It was a win which cemented Celtic’s hold on fifth place as they have clearly gained momentum under Macken who admitted it has been “challenging” taking charge well into the season.
“We have changed one or two little things which we believed have helped, but it is credit to the lads for listening and implementing what we are doing,” he continued.
Celtic made a dream start taking a sixth minute lead through Jack Irlam’s fourth goal of the season as he showed great strength to hold of an opponent before swivelling and firing low past keeper Louie Fallon.
There are pivotal moments in any match and, shortly after the goal, there was one such when Monks pulled off a terrific save to deny Mike Koral an equaliser for Witton who are already involved in a relegation scrap.
Celtic doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Radcliffe FC loanee Lewis Rawsthorn netted his first goal for the club in his third appearance.
He was released by a great through ball and raced clear to give Fallon no chance with a thunderous low shot.
Celtic wrapped up victory just short of the hour when Max Leonard notched his sixth of the season, a terrific near-post finish from a corner.
There were other chances which went begging but, scoring three goals and conceding none, was just about a perfect afternoon.
