Wolves 1, Manchester City 2
John Stones scored an injury time winner for Manchester City as they beat Wolves at Molineux with seconds to spare.
Embed from Getty ImagesStones, who also scored a 90th minute equaliser against title rivals Arsenal last month, was hailed by travelling fans after he headed home Phil Foden’s corner in the 5th minute of added time.
But everyone had to wait agonising minutes after the initial goal was ruled out for an offside due to Bernardo Silva ”being in an offside position and in Jose Sa’s line of sight” before a VAR pitch side review showed that the City midfielder had ducked out of the way before the ball reached Stones.
But it could all have ended quite differently if Wolves had managed to hold on to their lead.
City’s midfield continued to struggled in the absence of Rodri and they fell behind again in only the 7th minute after their defence was breached by a superb teasing cross by Nelson Semedo to find Jorgen Strand Larsen for an easy tap in following a fast break.
And City needed a lung-busting run back from Josko Gvardiol to put off Semedo as he tried to run clear for his own shot which went wide.
Gvardiol levelled matters for City with a trademark goal from outside the area after a cutback by Jeremy Doku released him as he came off the left flank in the 33rd minute.
But they found Wolves keeper Jose Sa in excellent form – denying Bernardo Silva, Savinho, and Ruben Dias while Matheus Cunha went close for the hosts.
City kept their cool, however, and the 18th corner finally paid off for a City side who have notoriously poor at executing set pieces.
Substitute Phil Foden sent the ball in and Silva nudged Sa before getting out of the way of John Stones’ winning header 5 minutes into added time and seconds from full time to send them – at least temporarily – back to the top of the league.
