Tottenham 2, Manchester City 1 (Carabao Cup 4th Round)
Tottenham inflicted a first defeat of the season on Manchester City as they knocked the injury-hit Blues out of the Carabao Cup.
Early goals by Timo Werner and Pape Sarr put City on the back foot while Matheus Nunes gave City hope with a fine strike in first half injury time.
With an ever deepening injury list Pep Guardiola had opted to rest players including Erling Haaland from the game and with the Norwegian showing no sign of coming off the bench even when City only needed a goal to stay in the tie.
The Blues could not find an equaliser to force penalties and Spurs found out that they will host Manchester United in the quarter finals – a United side with a new boss by the time the fixture rolls around in a competition they would quite like to win given recent comments by boss Ange Postecoglou.
Victory came at a cost though – new injuries affected both sides again and Spurs endured a big blow when Micky van ver Ven went off with a hamstring injury after just 14 minutes with Werner also making way in the second half with a groin problem.
City suffered a big injury blow themselves when Savinho, who had laid on Nunes’ goal, was stretchered off with a heavy knock to the ankle.
While it was largely expected that City’s luck with their small squad in recent seasons would eventually come back to bite them – it was almost expected that the reckoning would come at a stadium where they had won just twice in eight visits before tonight.
