Manchester City have had seven of their players including Rodri – and men’s team manager Pep Guardiola – nominated for a number of Ballon d’Or awards.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or gala will be held in Paris’ Theatre du Chatelet on Monday 28 October.
In a year where City secured an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title, their first ever FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, the men’s team had four players nominated for the award: Rodri, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Ruben Dias.
And Rodri, who also lifted the 2024 European Championship with Spain this summer, may have the best chance of the nominated players to lift the coveted Ballon d’Or.
City’s Women had three players shortlisted for the Women’s Ballon d’Or – Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Yui Hasegawa and Lauren Hemp – after the women’s team set a new record for consecutive Women’s Super League wins in a season where they secured UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification and only missed out on the WSL title itself on goal difference.
Pep Guardiola was nominated for Men’s Coach of the Year after winning the award in 2023 – he led City to three trophies in 2023-24.
And new signing Savinho is a nominee for the Kopa Trophy for the best performing player under the age of 21 for his role in guiding previous club Girona to the Champions League for the first time in the La Liga club’s history.
City will also look to secure a third consecutive Men’s Club of the Year award having been named amongst a shortlist of five potential award winners.
In a sign of the times, this is the first year that neither Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi have been nominated since 2003 while City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was not nominated for the first time in ten years.
