Manchester City 1, Manchester United 1 (Manchester City win penalty shootout 7-6)
Ederson took a penalty after saving Jadon Sancho’s spot kick as Manchester City came from behind to win the Community Shield on penalties in a dramatic curtain raiser for the forthcoming season.
Bernardo Silva took the Community Shield to penalties after his 89th minute header cancelled out Alejandro Garnacho’s counter attack goal.
But the City birthday boy, 30 today, missed the Blues’ first spot kick in the subsequent penalty shoot out before Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans missed their efforts to leave Manuel Akanji to rifle the winning penalty into the roof of the net as Manchester City lifted their first silverware of the season 7-6 in the sudden death stage of the penalty shootout.
Victory afforded City the chance to savour revenge for their FA Cup defeat at Wembley 11 weeks ago as United lost in the Community Shield game for the tenth time – more than any other club in the competition’s history.
And although only one of the last 13 winners of the Community Shield have gone on to lift that season’s Premier League title – that club was City in 2018/19 – the last time they lifted that particular piece of silverware.
City were on top for much for the first half hour in the sweltering Wembley conditions with Jeremy Doku and Oscar Bobb probing for weaknesses in the United defence.
James McAtee hit the woodwork after 24 minutes following a poor clearance by Lisandro Martinez fell to him following some good pressing by Bobb and Erling Haaland forced Andre Onana into a panicked ball out from the back.
United were too slow in the build up to trouble City most of the time but they had the better chances when they finally sorted themselves out towards the end of the first half.
Amad Diallo cut through the City defence and squared the ball but just too far in front of Mason Mount who missed the chance of a tap in.
And Marcus Rashford had just Ederson to beat when United moved the ball quickly in front of the City defence but screwed his effort well wide as United improved towards the end of the first half.
It was the first Manchester derby without a shot on target in the first half since October 2016 in the League Cup despite the best efforts of both sides but as is usual with these games things picked up a little in the second half..
Bruno Fernandes thought he had opened the scoring with a spectacular chip to beat Ederson from the edge of the area after 54 minutes but the offside flag ruled it out.
Lifted by a wave of support from the United fans, Erik Ten Hag made a raft of substitutions.
Facundo Pellistri, Toby Collyer, Scott McTominay, and Alejandro Garnacho came on for Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, and Alejandro Garnacho while Marcus Rashford was pushed into the striker role.
City pushed on and Josko Gvardiol shot wide from 25 yards out.
Nico O’Reilly was replaced by Matheus Nunes while Savinho replaced Doku after 64 minutes and City fans started to sing for the introduction of Kevin De Bruyne who warmed up on the side lines.
United missed another gilt edged chance for Rashford, laid on by Garnacho on a direct attack, as they caught City cold but the Reds striker turned his shot wide with just Ederson to beat and also headed a corner wide with McTominay just missing his chance to tap the ball past Ederson.
Pep Guardiola called for Bernado Silva to steady the City ship for the last 10 minutes.
But it was United to struck first after Garnacho cut inside from the right and found the bottom corner with 8 minutes to go after City lost the ball in midfield and the Reds counter attacked immediately with Fernandes finding his man from midfield.
Jadon Sancho was immediately introduced but United could not hold on and Bobb wriggled his way into a bit of space, chipped the ball up for Bernardo Silva who flew in to head the Blues level from 7 yards out with scant resistance from Pellistri).
This time the roar was for Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake to come on in the last minute as City held on for a nervous penalty shootout that they eventually won.
PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester City 1, Manchester United 1 (Manchester City win penalty shootout 7-6)
MAN CITY PLAYER RATINGS
Ederson: 6. Very little to do in the first half but then concede an offside chipped goal by Bruno Fernandes before saving again from him later. Made himself big to put off Marcus Rashford as United threatened. Saved Jadon Sancho’s penalty before scoring one of his own.
Rico Lewis: 7. Inverted into midfield from his right back role and added options and tenacity for City in a more forward thinking role.
Manuel Akanji: 6. Good distribution from the back and scored the winning spot kick.
Ruben Dias: 6. Took the full force of a Bruno Fernandes shot in the face.
Josko Gvardiol: 6. Continued where he left off for City from left back, even had a right footed shot in the second half which went wide.
Mateo Kovacic: 6. Quarter backed midfield for City from a deeper role and moved around a bit more after some notes from Pep Guardiola.
Nico O’Reilly: 6. Physical presence in a packed midfield zone, not fazed when the ball didn’t quite fall nicely for him.
James McAtee: 7. Occupied one of the free 8 roles, pushed to the left to support Jeremy Doku and looked comfortable. Curled a shot against the post after Oscar Bobb pressed Andre Onana into a mistake and dragged a second half shot wide.
Oscar Bobb: 8. Several mazy runs caused concern for United. Had a shot too. His ability to get away from opponents paid dividends in the 89th minute when he found some space and set up Bernardo Silva for the equaliser.
Jeremy Doku: 6. Got into some great positions but end product not quite there.
Erling Haaland: 6. Relished a physical duel with Harry Maguire.
Matheus Nunes (on for Nico O’Reilly, 64): 6. Earned a booking for shoving Scott McTominay.
Savinho (on for Jeremy Doku, 64): 6. Played on the left wing after the departure of Jeremy Doku. Early action saw him recycle the ball and earn a corner but he will need time to get on the City wavelength.

Mason Mount: 6. Failed to spot a prime chance to score in the first half.
