Japanese full back Risa Shimizu has joined Manchester City after leaving West Ham United in the summer.
Shimizu, 28, has signed a three year deal to keep her at the Joie Stadium until the summer of 2027 and will wear the number 2 shirt for City.
She becomes the second major signing of the summer after the arrival of Vivianne Miedema as the club look to go one step further than last season when they narrowly lost out on the title to Chelsea.
The experienced Japan international has earned 78 caps since her international debut in 2017, featuring at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019 and 2023.
She began her career with Tokyo Verde Beleza before joining West Ham in the Women’s Super League where she made 44 appearances for the Hammers, scoring one goal, and now joins her Japan team-mate Yui Hasegawa at City.
Shimizu said: “First of all, it’ll be a challenge, but one I’m ready for.
“City play football with a high possession style, which I like.
“I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style.
“I can’t wait to get started and hopefully lift the trophy with my new teammates.”
Charlotte O’Neill said: “Risa’s addition to Manchester City showcases our commitment to building a winning team.
“We’re extremely proud of the blend of international and domestic talent we have, and I’m looking forward to seeing Risa make her mark.”
Head Coach Gareth Taylor continued: “Risa brings intelligence and technical quality to the team.
“She’s an established international with huge WSL experience and we are delighted to bring her to our club.”
Shimizu will link up with her country at the 2024 Paris Olympics before joining up with City for the first-ever Perth International Football Cup next month in preparation for the 2024-25 season.
