In-form Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been named Premier League Player of the Year 2023/24.
Already the current Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, Foden has previously twice been Young Player of the Year – in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
Foden has been in a rich vein of form this season, with 25 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, as Manchester City look to become the first men’s team in history to secure an unprecedented fourth top-flight title in a row this weekend.
A win at the Etihad tomorrow against West Ham will secure City’s place in history while an FA Cup win in the final at Wembley next weekend – against Manchester United – could secure a second consecutive Premier League and FA Cup Double.
Remarkably, it’s also the second time in a row that City have faced their cross-town rivals in the FA Cup final.
Foden, 23, saw off competition from other nominees including team-mate Erling Haaland and fellow City youth graduate Cole Palmer – now at Chelsea – plus players from rival clubs including Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Virgil Van Dijk, Alexander Isak and Ollie Watkins to claim the coveted award.
Foden said: “To win this award is an achievement that I am extremely proud of.
“The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs.
“Overall, I’ve been very happy with the way I have played this season and really pleased that I have been able to contribute with the goals and assists throughout the season.
“I’d like to thank all of the City staff, coaches and especially my teammates because without them this wouldn’t be possible.
“And I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as the award means a lot.”
