Manchester City 1, Manchester United 2
Manchester United pulled off the unlikely as they beat Champions Manchester City 2-1 with goals from teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Jeremy Doku scored a late consolation for City who looked below par in their attempt to secure a second consecutive Double.
United weren’t expected to do much against the 4-in-a-row Premier League champions but underdogs Manchester United came out roaring in the first half.
They had already tested Stefan Ortega early on before the Reds opened the scoring following a bizarre mix-up between Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega.
The Reds were in dreamland after a long ball into City territory allowed them to piece together a superb move ending in a pass from Bruno Fernandes to Kobbie Mainoo which the teenager finished with aplomb after 39 minutes.
Erling Haaland hit the woodwork and substitute Julian Alvarez fired wide in the second half as City tried to get back into the game, and they scored a late goal after 87 minutes through Jeremy Doku but it was too little too late as they could not prevent United from lifting a 13th FA Cup.
PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester City 1, Manchester United 2
Man City
Stefan Ortega: 6. One save to make in the first half but then an awful mistake, rushing up towards Josko Gvardiol to challenge for a ball that the Croat had covered. Wrong footed for Kobbie Maine’s goal. Good save to deny Alejandro Garnacho in the second half.
Kyle Walker: 6. Early defensive interception to stop Marcus Rashford getting a clear shot on goal. Had a 30 yard low shot saved by Andre Onana.
John Stones: 6. Surprise pick at centre back but acquitted himself well moving the ball around from defence, pushed into midfield in second half.
Nathan Ake: 6. Out of sorts. Sacrificed for Manuel Akanji in a half time reshuffle.
Josko Gvardiol: 5. Heavily involved but mistake gifted United the opening goal. Got back to stop Alejandro Garnacho running free in the second half.
Rodri: 6. Found it difficult to get moves started with midfield clogged up.
Kevin De Bruyne: 6. Found passing lanes blocked off, only brief sparks of inspiration against the organised Reds and key passes going astray – was taken off early in the second half.
Mateo Kovacic: 6. Deep lying playmaker role alongside Rodri didn’t really work as the space was flooded out by United. Replaced at half time.
Bernardo Silva: 6. Isolated on the right flank. Also lost the ball at crucial moments.
Phil Foden: 6. Not enough chances to get into the box and miskicked the one good chance that came to him after 54 minutes from Jeremy Doku. Created a superb chance for Julian Alvarez after 64 minutes but otherwise below his best.
Erling Haaland: 6. Early claim for penalty denied by Andy Madley, precious little service but when it came from Jeremy Doku he curled the ball against the bar.
Manuel Akanji (on for Nathan Ake, 46): 6. Sole central defender in second half reshuffle with John Stones pushed up into midfield.
Jeremy Doku (on for Mateo Kovacic, 46): 7. Stretched the United defence and created chances. Scored a late goal to give City hope.
Julian Alvarez (on for Kevin De Bruyne, 56): 6. On to provide more goal threat and shot over after the hour mark before firing wide after 64 minutes after Phil Foden found him.
Man Utd
Andre Onana: 7. Well protected and twice saved 30 yard efforts from Kyle Walker. Could have done better on Jeremy Doku goal.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7. Dealt well with Josko Gvardiol raids down his flank. Presented with new challenge of Jeremy Doku in second half and also battled hard.
Raphael Varane: 7. Good show at the back. Headed away a ball destined for Erling Haaland as City tried to create openings.
Lisandro Martinez: 7. Sailed a bit close to the wind early on but solid partnership with Raphael Varane and also got into the air too. Cramped up and had to go off in the second half.
Diogo Dalot: 6. Standing in at left back, didn’t get much chance to go forward but when he did he shot wide.
Sofyan Amrabat: 7. Helped crowd out midfield very successfully. Where has this Amrabat been?
Kobbie Mainoo: 7. Little bit of pressure early on but he stood tall and smashed in United’s second after a superb move after Bruno Fernandes set him up.
Scott McTominay: 6. Advanced midfield role, was injured in final minutes.
Bruno Fernandes: 8. Pushed up as false 9. Set up Kobbie Mainoo and was responsible for spotting spaces in City’s defence.
Marcus Rashford: 7. Wide on the left, early chance but outpaced by Kyle Walker. His first half goal was flagged offside because of Alejandro Garnacho. Rare sight of the him tracking back to dispossess Kevin De Bruyne but couldn’t sustain the intensity.
Alejandro Garnacho: 8. Wide right role. Got a first shot in after 9 minutes which Stefan Ortega saved but couldn’t believe his luck when a mix-up between Ortega and Gvardiol presented him with an empty net – he took full advantage. Thought he had set up Marcus Rashford but he was offside.
Jonny Evans (for Lisandro Martinez, 73): 6. On for the high balls into defence.
Rasmus Hojlund (on for Marcus Rashford, 73): 6. Battled hard for the ball.
Victor Lindelof (on for Alejandro Garnacho, 90+3): No time to mark
Mason Mount (on for Scott McTominay, 90+3): No time to mark
