Manchester United 1, Burnley 1
There was a frantic finish at Old Trafford as Burnley managed to salvage a late draw after Antony had given the Reds a lead.
The Brazilian winger thought he had won the game with a 79th minute breakaway goal – only his third goal of the season – before Zeki Amdouni was fouled by the otherwise excellent Andre Onana to give away a spot kick with three minutes to go that allowed Vincent Kompany’s seemingly doomed side to level up the game.
The Clarets had deserved a point after their efforts during the game but despite giving away 2 points for the penalty United were in debt to Andre Onana for keeping out a string of shots by the visitors who edged possession in a fairly even game.
The result suits neither side as Burnley remained two points adrift of Nottingham Forest in 17th while United remained in 6th but only a point clear of Newcastle United in 7th – any dreams of Champions League football must surely be beyond them as they are 12 points and a vastly inferior goal difference behind Aston Villa in 4th with only 4 games to play.
Aside from a speculative shot by David Datro Fofana that Andre Onana saved it was the Reds who had the majority of efforts by Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Christian Eriksen in the first 10 minutes.
The shots kept raining in to keep Aro Muric busy for the visitors as United adopted a more direct approach against the passing style of Burnley and Bruno Fernandes hit the post with a fierce shot after the ball broke to him in the box after 19 minutes.
But United had to be alert and a long range effort from Wilson Odobert had to be tipped over the bar by Andre Onana who also had to punch away the resulting corner after precious little to do in the first half.
Dara O’Shea also blazed over as Burnley enjoyed a good patch of possession midway through the first half.
And Josh Cullen’s shot was diverted by Lyle Foster with a header which was clawed away by Onana after 35 minutes before he also saved from Odobert.
Jacob Bruun Larsen won a foul on the edge of the area off a dismayed Casemiro in first half injury time but the Danish midfielder’s free kick was tame and easily saved by Onana.
Aro Muric saved twice from Antony as United improved after the break while Casemiro’s attempt to win a penalty was waved away as United started the second half strongly.
Zeki Amdouni became Burnley’s first change on 57 minutes, replacing Fofana as the visitors freshened up their attack but he could only blaze over after Burnley pounced on a loose ball from Onana to Fernandes and countered.
And Old Trafford was in uproar after Eriksen broke free but under pressure tried to slip in Antony only to see his attempted square ball deflect away harmlessly rather than see the Dane try for goal himself.
And yet when Garnacho broke free he was also tracked back and dispossessed despite his greater pace.
Frustrated, Erik Ten Hag made his first changes on 65 minutes – bringing off Rasmus Hojlund and Kobbie Mainoo and replacing them with Scott McTominay and Amad Diallo.
Diallo squared the ball for Garnacho who had his rising shot saved by Muric.
Jacob Bruun Larsen was next to come off as he was placed by Johan Berg Gudmundsson in the 72nd minute for Burnley who had turned from creative attackers into stern defenders just as United tried to turn up the heat.
Garnacho had another appeal for a penalty turned down after a solo run into the area where he was tackled by Dara O’Shea.
Burnley were becoming too sloppy at the back and they were finally punished with Antony the player breaking free and sliding the ball into the back of the net past Muric after he pounced on a loose pass by Sander Berge.
The Norwegian had his head in his hands as the Brazilian scored after running free.
Sofyan Amrabat was immediately summoned to replace Eriksen ut Burnley had the next best chance when United failed to clear properly and Gudmundson’s shot was deflected behind for a corner.
But there was more drama as Andre Onana was spotted by VAR cleaning out Amdouni in the melee and the penalty was awarded.
Amdouni stepped up and cooly slotted the spot kick into the bottom right corner as Onana dived the other way.
Scott McTominay had a great chance to put the Reds back into the lead but the ball was cleared off the line by O’Shea.
Muric also saved from Casemiro and Amad Diallo in a frantic injury time period where the Reds tried again to claim for a penalty without joy and Antony had a last ditch shot saved.
