England 0, Brazil 1
Palmeiras striker Endrick ended a 20 match unbeaten run at Wembley for England with a late winner for Brazil.
Embed from Getty Images17-year old Endrick, who will be joining Real Madrid in the summer, was the difference maker in a tepid game that looked set to end in a draw before his intervention to mark a first defeat for England since the World Cup in Qatar.
At 17 years and 246 days Endrick became the youngest ever male player to score a senior international goal at Wembley.
A pity then that England, one of the top seeds to win the Euros, were largely ineffective against one of the weakest Brazil teams in modern times.
Although Gareth Southgate fielded a decent side, they were without key attacking talents Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka while the injured Luke Shaw left a big gap down England’s left side.
And without the talent they used to have in previous years, England’s key player on the night Jude Bellingham was targeted for rotating fouls which disrupted their rhythm and while they earned several set pieces they didn’t make the most of them on the night.
There were debuts for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon from the start while Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo also made their senior national debuts in the defeat.
Only Gordon and Ollie Watkins of the starting lineup tonight might have not expected to be starting for England in the summer but the team looked disjointed and easy to disrupt by the Brazilians who worked hard for their chances on the night.
England were further weakened by the first half loss of Manchester City defender Kyle Walker to a suspected hamstring injury after he had cleared a Vinicius Junior shot off the line while United’s Harry Maguire struggled in the game.
Lucas Paqueta hit the woodwork while Raphina also went close after a Maguire mistake before Endrick scored in the 80th minute following a Lewis Dunk mistake as Dorival Junior celebrated his first match in charge of Brazil with an impressive win after a poor run of results.
