- Callum Lang completes Portsmouth transfer
- Academy graduate Lang spent six-and-a-half years with Latics
- Lang made his Latics league debut in January 2021 and went on to make over a century of appearances
Wigan Athletic have sold forward Callum Lang to Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee.
Lang first joined Latics at the age of 14 following his release from Liverpool as a schoolboy and had a successful time in the Wigan Athletic academy, eventually progressing through the youth ranks at the DW Stadium and into the first team.
Part of that success in the academy saw him win the Michael Millett Award as the Under-18s player of the season following a brilliant campaign for the U18s in 2016/17, which was capped off by a superb hat-trick in the Central League Cup final.
The 25-year-old made his senior debut against Blackpool in August 2017 before heading out on loan to Morecambe where he notched 10 goals in 31 appearances. Upon returning, Lang signed a two-year contract before enjoying further loan spells at Oldham Athletic, Shrewsbury Town and Motherwell.
Time away from the DW Stadium allowed Lang to hit the ground running upon his return and he made his Latics league debut in 2021 against Rochdale, where he scored in a 3-3 draw.
In that season, Lang went on to score nine goals in 24 appearances, ultimately helping his side defy the odds and escape relegation in a troubled season where Latics faced administration.
The following campaign saw Lang fire Latics to the Sky Bet League One title in 2021/22 with an impressive 18 goals before he stood by the club last season during another troubled spell under previous ownership.
Following Latics’ return to League One under new ownership, Lang was appointed vice-captain and featured 29 times during the current campaign.
He made a total of 143 appearances for Latics scoring 31 goals.
