Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland have won individual UEFA awards after Manchester City’s successful Treble-winning campaign.
City boss Pep Guardiola was named UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year while Erling Haaland was crowned UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.
Haaland saw off competition from Kevin de Bruyne and Lionel Messi to claim the player’s award after scoring 52 goals in 53 appearances last term.
Both awards were announced at the Champions League draw in which City were named in Group G alongside RB Leipzig, Red Star Belgrade, and Young Boys.
The Norwegian adds this latest award – voted for by coaches and journalists – to his PFA Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season and Premier League Young Player of the Season awards.
And Guardiola won his award for the first time after leading his side to their first UEFA Champions League title – the third trophy in City’s Treble – becoming the first manager to complete the Treble with two separate clubs.
In doing so he beat stiff competition from Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi and former Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti to lift his award.
Commenting on the award, Haaland said: “I am honoured to have been named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.
“There are so many top talents across Europe who could have won this award, so I am really grateful to everyone who voted for me.
“We have an incredible team here at Manchester City and this accolade wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my teammates, coaches and all of the staff at the Club.
“It was an incredible season for all of us and for me personally after securing the Treble.
“Lifting my first Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League was an incredible feeling and it’s a feeling we all want to share again this season.”
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “Congratulations to Pep and his staff for winning this award, a deserved recognition for an incredible season.
“To win three trophies was extraordinary and to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time was such a special moment.
“He is so focused on delivering success and sets high standards that keep us challenging for trophies every season.
“Erling had a remarkable season in all competitions, including the Champions League, and this award is recognition for that.
“There were so many stand out moments in Europe, including that brilliant goal against Borussia Dortmund and those five goals at home to RB Leipzig.
“To win this award in his first season with us is a wonderful achievement.”
