Phil Jones is the most high-profile departure as Manchester United announced its retained list which sees Denton’s Rhys Bennett land a new deal.
The 31-year-old injury-jinxed centre back is leaving after 12 years and 229 appearances for the Reds following his move from Blackburn Rovers.
Axel Tuanzebe, who has been at the club since the age of eight, is also departing after 37 first-team appearances.
Tuanzebe famously got the better of Kylian Mbappe in the group-stage victory over Paris Saint-Germain in 2020/21 but has also been unlucky with injuries during his time at United but returned to action on loan at Stoke City last season.
Rhys Bennett holds aloft the FA Youth Cup
The 25-year-old captained the Reds at every level including the first team for the Carabao Cup tie against home-town Rochdale in 2019.
Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard are also moving on after loan spells at Salford City and Portsmouth, respectively. Both made their first-team debuts for United in a 2019 Europa League clash against Astana in Kazakhstan.
Academy players Charlie Wellens, son of former Reds’ player Richie, Eric Hanbury and Manni Norkett are also leaving at the end of their contracts.
United said the Academy is proud of all its departing young players and their achievements while at the club. They will all be supported in securing professional contracts at new clubs, provided with a bespoke aftercare programme and will always have a lifelong association with Manchester United.
Regarding contract negotiations, United says discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new deal while fellow keepers Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their current deals.
Extensions were also activated for defenders Bennett, who captained the Reds to glory in the FA Youth Cup, and Ethan Laird while young forward Mateo Mejua has also been offered a new deal.
Under-21s player-coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to stay after discussions over a new contract.
