Sam Mewis, Rose Lavelle, and Megan Campbell have left Manchester City after the conclusion of the 2020/21 Women’s Super League season.
Mewis, 28, and Lavelle, 26, have returned to their respective American National Women’s Soccer League clubs – North Carolina Courage and OM Reign respectively – as both players seek a place in the USWNT Olympic squad.
Versatile defender Campbell, 27, will leave in June after an injury-hit spell for the club having made 43 appearances since joining in February 2016, scoring one goal in that time as City picked up the domestic treble and two more FA Cups and one Continental Tyres League Cup.
Mewis scored 16 goals in 32 appearances for the Blues while Lavelle scored five times in 26 games as both players made an impact on City’s title challenge.
The tall American – dubbed ‘The Tower of Power’ scored the opening goal as City retained last season’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup in in November last year against Everton.
Mewis said: “I am so grateful for my time here in Manchester.
“To the fans – thank you so much for your undying support. I have loved representing this club and wish we could have played in front of you all this season.
“I have learned so much while being here, especially from my team mates.
“I never expected to make such string friendships in a short space of time, but I can honestly say that I love these girls and hope to play with everyone again someday.
“I’m a Manchester City fan for life!”
Like Mewis, Lavelle thanked the front office and coaching staff at City, and added: “It’s been an honour to work alongside some of the best players and team mates in the world.
“For everything soccer has given me, one of my favourite things is the friendships and I’m leaving City having met some of the best friends I could ever have asked for.
“I wish the Club endless success in the future and will be a City fan for life now.”
Campbell said: “Leaving will be hard as Manchester has been my home for so many years.
“I have made some friends for life and have loved representing the club while playing in front of you amazing fans.”
The departure of the three players will leave a hole in the City squad which City will need to recruit to fill as they came within two points of top spot in the WSL last term, behind Chelsea, reached the Women’s Champions League quarter finals, and remain in this season’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup going into next season.
