Huddersfield Town 1, Bristol City 2
Bristol City recorded a first win in six games as they came back from a goal down at Huddersfield to win 2-1 with late goals by Jay Dasilva and Jamie Paterson.
Josh Koroma had scored just before half time as Huddersfield Town’s patient approach paid off against their visitors and the Terriers dominated matters for 75 minutes but could not create enough chances to win the game sooner.
Nakhi Wells hit the crossbar for the Robins who were under control until late substitutions resulted in a late equaliser by Jay Dasilva which was followed by an even later winner scored by Jamie Paterson after Antoine Semenyo had struck the post.
City were hit by a blow in the build up to kick off which saw Tyreeq Bakinson ruled out through a severe headache with his place in the starting lineup taken by Adam Nagy while Opi Edwards was named on the bench.
The Terriers had to make do without Tommy Elphick (knee), Juninho Bacuna (illness), Alex Prichard (ankle) although Danny Ward (hamstring), and Rarmani Edmonds-Green (hip) had only just returned to training and were not fit enough to be considered for the match day squad.
Ex-Town forward Wells was given plenty of space to shoot and crashed his volley onto the crossbar as Town allowed an attack by the visitors to cut through them with Chris Martin allowed to cross from the left after 11 minutes.
The lively Pipa cut inside and ran across the edge of the box before trying a shot which was saved by Daniel Bentley a few minutes later as Town started to settle into their own game.
Callum O’Dowda found himself in space after half an hour but blazed his effort over the bar while Josh Koroma fell over after falling over as he ran into the box with the ball a quickly following a quick throw-in.
Zak Vyner’s miscued header went wide with set pieces looking increasingly important in the tactical probing by both sides.
Town finally got the goal that their first half showing deserved when space on the right finally opened up for Isaac Mbenza with a crossfield pass from the left.
Mbenza crossed for Josh Koroma to fire Town into the lead after 43 minutes with his third goal of the season – just what Town had deserved after they had dominated the first half.
Town’s work rate remained high in the second half as they disrupted Bristol City’s attempts to build up while presenting a threat of their own.
Chris Brunt fired wide after 53 minutes when a Stearman headed clearance fell to him.
Harry Toffolo’s cross from the left across the box went unconverted as Town carved out another great chance to extend their lead.
The Robins went more attacking by introducing Famara Diedhiou to play upfront after replacing Tommy Rowe in the 59th minute
Dean Holden substitutions change the game for Bristol City at Huddersfield Town
Tomas Kalas headed wide from a City corner, and City boss Dean Holden made a double change to bring on Antoine Semenyo and Jamie Paterson for Wells and Brunt with 22 minutes to go.
Callum O’Dowda’s free kick was collected early by Ben Hamer as City finally recorded a shot on target in the 72nd minute.
Sarr cleared from a low free kick by Paterson, conceding a corner, clearing the resulting City set piece while Semenyo’s shot was saved by Hamer from an offside position.
Carel Eiting was brought on to add more solidity to midfield but City equalised with a close range shot by Jay Dasilva after Semenyo’s cross from the right despite a suspicion of offside in the build-up.
A late shot by Semenyo was deflected just past the back post for City as they chased an unlikely winner.
Fraizer Campbell skied his own chance for Town glory but the Terriers were sickened by a late late City goal after they failed to clear a Semenyo shot which struck the post and in the resulting scramble was turned in by Paterson in the 83rd minute.
Matty Daly was brought on for Christopher Schindler as Town sought to rescue a point but Toffolo’s cross was intercepted by Vyner as Town could not respond to the late blow.
