Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made four changes after the embarrassing defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir with David De Gea, 30 today, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, and Fred coming back into the side.
Dean Henderson, Alex Tuanzebe, Donny van de Beek, and Nemanja Matic missed out.
Jordan Pickford and Bernard were recalled for Everton while James Rodriguez returned after injury for the Toffees as Everton made 6 changes in all from the side that lost 2-1 against Newcastle.
And United had to respond to going a goal behind early in the game at Goodison Park.
After this week’s huge error in Istanbul Everton capitalised on a massive lump upfield from Pickford which was headed into the path of Bernard by Lindelof.
The Brazilian pounced to score with a shot which went through the legs of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and into the bottom corner after 19 minutes.
But with Rodriguez going missing all too often down Everton’s right flank there was room for attacks down that side for United – and they duly capitalised.
Bruno Fernandes levelled matters with a header from 12 yards out after he met Luke Shaw’s cross at the end of a well timed run to the penalty spot for his fifth goal of the season in the 25th minue.
And United had a chance to quickly double their lead when Mata crossed from the left but Pickford commanded his area and collected the ball.
Everton responded and Lucas Digne went for goal and hit the near post with a fierce shot.
But United took the lead in the 32nd minute through Fernandes’ chipped ball towards Rashford which the United forward didn’t connect with but the ball went in off the back post.
Everton didn’t overly trouble United who had chances to extend their lead after the break but the result was only made safe in the fifth minute of added time.
Fernandes unselfishly laid the ball to Edinson Cavani who swept home from 8 yards out after Everton had overcommitted looking for the equaliser and the Reds caught them cold on the break.
