Manchester City will face either Juventus or Lyon in the quarter finals of the Champions League if they get past Real Madrid in their Round of 16 tie.
City have a 2-1 advantage after a first leg victory in Madrid in February but will have to navigate the return leg without striker Sergio Aguero who had surgery on a knee injury which has ruled him out of the rest of the Project Restart Premier League season.
Aguero’s absence casts doubt on the Argentine striker’s involvement for the remainder of the competition, should City qualify for the latter stages where City might expect to meet one of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Barcelona, or Napoli.
It had been confirmed earlier in the week that City would play the home leg of their Round of 16 tie at the Etihad Stadium after recent suggestion that remaining games should be played in Portugal.
And the games will come thick and fast with the quarter finals, semi final, and final scheduled to be held in Portugal from August 12-23 as one-off games after City’s game with Real is held on August 7 or 8.
This season’s final will now be played in the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon.
UEFA have confirmed that they will adopt the same 5 substitute rule that has been used in the Premier League for Project Restart.
City will learn the result of their appeals against a 2 year Champions League ban with the Court of Arbitration for Sport from 9.30am on Monday.
Manchester United’s Europa League draw revealed
Manchester United look set to face either FC Copenhagen or Istanbul Basaksehir after the Europa League quarter final draw was made today.
The Reds are all but through to the last 8 after a 5-0 first leg thrashing of LASK in Austria leaving the apparent formality of a home leg on August 5.
They could be joined in the last 8 by Wolves who will have a tie against Roma or Sevilla if they beat Olympiakos at home on the 5th – the clubs are level at 1-1 on aggregate.
And United and Wolves could meet in the semi finals if they progress from their respective quarter finals.
Scottish side Rangers will play Inter Milan or Getafe if they can overcome a 3-1 deficit against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany on August 6.
German cities will then host the final three rounds of the Europa League with the final moved from Gdansk in Poland to Cologne on August 21.
