Gemma Bonner is the latest Manchester City player to sign a new contract, extending her stay at the City Football Academy for a further two years.
Leeds-born Bonner, 28, joined in the summer of 2018 after six years with Liverpool where she captained the Reds to successive Barclays FA Women’s Super League titles.
After her arrival in Manchester she helped City lift the Continental Cup and FA Cup in her first season at the club and became a key figure in a defence which leaked just nine goals in 16 league games last season.
Bonner, who has 11 senior England caps, has also struck up a fine partnership with captain Steph Houghton and was a member of the squad that won the 2019 SheBelieves Cup.
Speaking about her contract extension, Bonner said: “I’m really happy to put pen to paper and I’m looking forward to getting back with the rest of the squad ahead of the new season.
“I’ve had a really good two years at the Club so far and – especially last season – I felt like I played some of my best football so far with some incredible players around me, so I can’t wait to continue that journey.
“With the appointment of Gareth Taylor as our Head Coach too, it’s a really exciting time for the Club and we’re ready for the challenges that lie ahead.”
Head of Women’s Football Gavin Makel added: “Gemma is the type of player and person that any team would love to have in their squad.
“Last season, we saw just what she is capable of, with a host of outstanding performances by utilising her wealth of experience.
“Retaining players such as Gemma is an important step to where we want to be as a Club and we’re delighted that she has signed a new contract.”
Bonner’s signing is further good news for Manchester City who are looking to win back the WSL title next season and are banking on experience as well as youth this summer.
Former Everton striker Chloe Kelly has already signed for the club while it’s widely expected that Lucy Bronze will re-sign for the club and Bronze’s fellow Lyon team-mate and ex-Manchester United captain Alex Greenwood will be signing for the club after the conclusion of their Champions League campaign.
Players to have departed so far this season include Pauline Bremer and Tessa Wullaert.
