Defender Megan Campbell has signed a one year contract extension to stay with Manchester City’s Women’s team until the summer of 2021.
Campbell, 26, moved to the the North West of England in February 2016 after spending the majority of her career in Ireland with St Francis and Raheny United.
The long throw specialist also had a stint in America with Florida State Seminoles before coming to England and has made 42 appearances in all competitions for City.
She helped City win the league and Continental Cup double in her first season with the club and provided two assists as City beat Birmingham City 4-1 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup a year later.
Campbell hasn’t had the best of luck with injuries at the City Football Academy, though, and sustained a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury against LSK Kvinner in November 2017.
The Republic of Ireland international has also been out with a tendon injury since the start of this year.
But following a successful operation in February she is back on the comeback trail and the extended contract will ensure that the popular defender will be able to challenge for a place in the team.
Speaking about her extension, Campbell said: “I’m really pleased to have signed a new contract, especially unfortunately being injured at the minute.
“It’s always a difficult situation when you’re coming to the end of your contract and you’ve picked up an injury or a niggle, but I’m so glad City have given their full support behind me to get back fit.
“To have that faith from the Club is a great gesture and I’m looking forward to getting back playing again.”
Head of Women’s Football Gavin Makel added: “We’re extremely pleased that Megan has committed herself to Manchester City Women for another season
“She has proven herself to be an integral member of our set-up in recent years and we’re thrilled that she has followed in the footsteps of a number of her teammates by putting pen to paper on an extension with the Club.
“Despite her injury set-back at the start of 2020, the positive attitude and resolute determination she has shown during her rehab has been admirable and we look forward to her return to action alongside the rest of the squad in the upcoming 2020/21 Barclays FA Women’s Super League season.”
