Manchester City goalkeeper Karima Benameur Taieb has become the latest player to sign a new contract to stay with the club.
A two-year deal was announced for the experienced custodian, who recently adopted her mother’s surname, to extend her stay in Manchester until 2022.
Benameur Taieb, 31, moved to Manchester in 2019 from Paris FC after spending her whole career in France with clubs including AS Saint-Etienne, Toulouse and Paris Saint-Germain.
The French international did not concede a goal in all three of her appearances in the 2019/20 campaign – a 5-0 Continental Cup victory over Leicester City, a 10-0 FA Women’s Cup win against Ipswich Town and as a late substitute in a 3-3 Barclays FA Women’s Super League draw with Chelsea.
Speaking about her new deal, Benameur Taieb said: “I am really happy to sign a new contract with Manchester City.
“I have learned a lot of things since joining the Club and last season was a great one for us, even with it unfortunately ending early.
“City’s strength is that we have a fantastic atmosphere and team spirit, but everybody works so hard too and gives the very best of themselves to ensure that we succeed.
“I am thrilled to have two more years here and I am very excited for the future.”
Head of Women’s Football Gavin Makel added: “Having joined the club last summer, Karima has proven herself to be a top-class goalkeeper and an outstanding team player, whilst she has fitted seamlessly into the culture of the group.
“I’m delighted that Karima has extended her stay with us for the foreseeable future.”
Karen Bardsley joins Manchester Football Association Board
Another Manchester City goalkeeper was in the news today with Karen Bardsley being appointed to the Board of Directors of the Manchester FA.
Bardsley, who has 81 England caps, becomes the first professional footballer to sit on a County FA’s Board of Directors.
She said: “I’m so excited to join the board and absolutely can’t wait to get out and visit the players, coaches and volunteers in women and girls’ football in Manchester once the grassroots season kicks off again.
“And alongside playing with City, I’m so excited to now focus on increasing participation numbers of women and girls’ playing football in Manchester. It’s something that is very close to my heart and I really do believe that women and girls’ football has a bright future here.”
