Pauline Bremer, Jess Park, and Georgia Stanway registered hat tricks in Manchester City’s 10-0 win over fourth tier Ipswich Town in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup.
Manchester City interim boss Alan Mahon won his second game in charge of the team, paying full respect to Ipswich, who top the FA Women’s National League Division One South East and had brought 400 fans to the City Football Academy Stadium, by fielding a side with 10 full internationals and an England Youth international.
He made just five changes to the side that beat Bristol City in Women’s Super League action in midweek, bringing in Karima Benameur, Janine Beckie, Laura Coombs, Tyler Toland, Pauline Bremer, and England youth international Jess Park.
Ellie Roebuck, Gemma Bonner, Caroline Weir, Jill Scott, Tessa Wullaert, and Ellen White stepped down.
And things went brilliantly after a slow start – Bremer, Park, and Georgia Stanway all took home a match ball each – completing hat tricks in a 7 goal second half after Coombs had opened the scoring against the Tractor Girls.
Pauline Bremer’s header looped onto the bar within 2 minutes of kick off and Lauren Hemp diverted a Keira Walsh shot wide of the post as City meant business from the start against their youthful opponents.
Jess Park saw her shot deflected for a corner after Bremer put her through as the visitors defended stoutly at the start.
But City made the breakthrough after Ipswich committed players forward on their first corner and were caught on the break after losing the ball.
Manchester City break Ipswich Town resistance
Laura Coombs broke free and scored City’s opener after the visitors were caught cold.
Hemp was denied by a great stop by Nikita Runnacles before City doubled their lead when Bremer was given too much time to pick her spot after Hemp crossed to her.
And Jess Park made it three after the Tractor Girls failed to fully clear another Hemp cross.
Coombs headed wide while Bremer screwed a shot wide as City pushed for more goals either side of the restart.
The German wasn’t to be denied her second of the day as she lashed the ball into the roof of the net after exchanging passes with Janine Beckie five minutes after the restart.
Matilde Fidalgo replaced Hemp a minute later, allowing Georgia Stanway to go upfront into her favoured striking role.
And Stanway nearly got on the scoresheet after Beckie’s cross allowed Bremer a flying header which was blocked but Stanway blazed the rebound over.
City didn’t have to wait long for Stanway to take her chance though, and she turned in Janine Beckie’s right wing cross from close range after 57 minutes to make it 5-0.
With the game effectively over, the superior fitness of City’s women allowed them to run riot with a further five goals in the last half hour.
Bremer clinched her hat trick when she lifted the ball over Runnacles to make it six – with her 22nd goal of the season from 22 games, before Stanway converted another Beckie cross from the right.
Stanway then unselfishly set up Park for her second goal before the England youth international fired a 25-yard rocket to secure her own hat trick.
With the chance to match City’s men’s team record number of goals scored Stanway came up with the goods – a low strike from outside the box which beat Runnacles to bring ten goals up as City qualified for the quarter finals of the Women’s FA Cup in style.
