England midfielder Keira Walsh has signed a new three year contract extension, committing to stay with Manchester City until 2023.
The Rochdale-born player, 22, has been with the club since joining at the age of 17 and made her debut against Notts County in July 2014.
She quickly became a mainstay at the heart of the City midfield, winning the Continental Cup in her first season and going on to lift it on two more occasions along with the FA Cup (twice) and the WSL title once in her time at the club.
She earned her first England cap in November 2017 and has represented the Lionesses a total of 26 times, captaining the side during a 6-0 win over Kazakhstan in September 2018, and helping the side to a fourth place finish in the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.
She was linked with a move away from the club last summer after she fell out of love with the game but has bounced back this term.
Despite the departure of manager Nick Cushing to New York City FC, the women’s team top the WSL table and are bidding to retain the Women’s FA Cup in an exciting season.
And City look set to invest more in the women’s team in the future with speculation over the permanent successor to Cushing set to increase in the summer.
Keira Walsh signs a three year contract extension to stay with Manchester City
Speaking about her contract extension, Walsh said: “It’s amazing. It’s important I’ve renewed my contract with the Club I grew up supporting. It’s a special moment for me in my career.
“I still have to pinch myself a little bit sometimes when I’m in and around the building and in training.
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be. I feel confident playing here, I seem to play well every game and the team are playing well.
“For me now, it’s about pushing on and taking ownership of other people’s games, helping them to improve – being more of a leader in the team. I’m really happy to have put pen to paper.”
Head of Women’s Football Gavin Makel added: “Over the last few seasons, Keira has more than shown what she is capable of and in that time, has become such an important part of the team.
“At only 22, she is producing performances that are far beyond her years and is developing not only into a world class player, but a leader on and off the pitch, complimenting the other strong voices we have within the squad.
“Keira’s signing is another statement of our intentions to remain competitive in the hunt for honours.”
