Manchester City 1, Manchester United 2
Manchester City are now 14 points off the Premier League pace setters Liverpool after a 2-1 home defeat to rivals Manchester United in the Manchester derby.
Embed from Getty ImagesThe Reds went up to 5th place with the win following a penalty by Marcus Rashford and a long range drive by Anthony Martial.
Nicolas Otamendi came on for the injured John Stones in the second half and he pulled a goal back through a towering header from Riyad Mahrez’ corner with five minutes to go but the Blues could not conjure up an equaliser.
City were not clinical enough with their chances and there was some VAR controversy over two handball calls which went United’s way but the truth was the Reds fully deserved their win.
PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester City 1, Manchester United 2
Ederson: 6. Early saves from Daniel James, Jesse Lingard, and Anthony Martial as United were brave. Went the wrong way for Marcus Rashford’s penalty, and was beaten at his near post by Anthony Martial.
Kyle Walker: 6. Pace required at the back to help prevent United counter attacks. Put a decent cross in the other end but too close to David De Gea. Was denied a penalty claim after Fred slid in and appeared to handle his cross.
John Stones: 5. Exposed by lack of cover in front of the defence. Went down injured in the second half and had to go off.
Fernandinho: 5. Too few options to pass to in front of him and was forced into dangerous fouls as United counter attacked.
Angelino: 5. Got up high and attacked with crosses but couldn’t cope with Daniel James defensively leaving City’s left flank too exposed.
Rodrigo: 6. Missing when Daniel James and Anthony Martial were combining for United’s second goal. Improved after the break, intercepting a Daniel James cross for Martial. Had a shot tipped over by David De Gea.
Kevin De Bruyne: 7. Some good moments and passes but team mates not on his wavelength.
David Silva: 6. Plenty of tricks early on, got into shooting positions often but had shots blocked by Luke Shaw and a trio of chances including a free kick saved by David De Gea. Faded later in the game.
Bernardo Silva: 5. Gave away the penalty but worked hard with little reward down a side that City relatively ignored.
