Joao Cancelo has joined Manchester City after long running transfer saga in a £60m package which saw Danilo move to Juventus.
The Portuguese right back, 25, has moved from Italian champions Juventus for a fee of £60m with City utility player Danilo moving in the opposite direction for a fee believed to be £34m.
Cancelo becomes City’s third signing of the season after the arrivals of Rodri and Angelino earlier in the summer.
Cancelo “City are a fantastic club, with a brilliant manager and I am delighted to be here.
“Everything about them has impressed me, from the facilities, to their style of play.
“I am always looking to develop my game and win trophies and I believe I can do that here, so now I’m really looking forward to the new season and testing myself in the Premier League.”
Txiki Begiristain, City’s Director of Football added: “Joao is a fine player and an excellent attacking full-back who will provide us with a real threat on the right-hand side
“We have been impressed with his progress and have no doubt he can continue to shine here in Manchester.
“He fits the profile of player we want here at Manchester City.
“His best years are ahead of him, he’s technically proficient and has the physical attributes we desire.
“I am delighted we have secured his signature.”
Cancelo will wear the number 27 shirt and joins his old friend Bernardo Silva at the Etihad – both played for eight years together in the Benfica set-up.
After spells at Valencia and Inter Milan, Cancelo won the Italian title at Juventus last term and lifted the Nations League alongside Bernardo Silva with Portugal.
With a net spend of £26m, then, City have signed up an attacking player who is at home bombing up the right flank and putting crosses in.
The move, which has been mooted for several weeks this summer, suggests a tactical shift in the forthcoming season for Pep Guardiola’s City side.
If and when Benjamin Mendy becomes fit it could see City play a different formation with width being provided by Mendy and Cancelo or Kyle Walker.
Leroy Sane’s injury may not affect a move away from the club
Leroy Sane’s future has been in doubt after the German was apparently injured after an early challenge in Sunday’s Community Shield but that may not deter Bayern Munich.
The Germans have held a public courting of the young winger for weeks now, and City boss Pep Guardiola may even allow Sane to leave without a replacement if Bayern match their charm offensive with a sizeable bid.
A change in tactics could keep opposition clubs busy while trying to work out ways of countering City’s campaign for a third successive league title.
