The Etihad Stadium will host Manchester’s first Barclays FA Women’s Super League Manchester Derby on Saturday, September 7.
The game, which kicks off at 3pm, will be the first time that City and United’s women’s teams have faced off in the top tier of English women’s football in the Women’s Super League era.
And it will take place during the first men’s international break of the season giving fans a chance to watch a high profile women’s match.
It will be the first chance for football fans to see players from England’s Lionesses compete with other players from the World Cup stage and only the second time City’s women’s team have played at the Etihad following a dramatic May 2014 win.
That game ended with a last minute winner 1-0 against Everton – on the way to lifting the club’s first ever trophy – the Continental Cup.
City will see seven Lionesses return (Karen Bardsley, captain Steph Houghton, Demi Stokes, Keira Walsh, Jill Scott, Georgia Stanway, and Ellen White) while United have two returning players (Alex Greenwood and Abbie McManus).
The Lionesses, who helped Team GB qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games next year, finished in fourth place at the World Cup and inspired the nation.
City’s kit sponsors PUMA have joined forces with Manchester City to present the Manchester Derby and fans can expect a number of activities to come in celebration of the historic fixture.
Commenting on the historic fixture, Gavin Makel, Head of Women’s Football at Manchester City said:
“Following an exciting summer of women’s football and the Lionesses’ impressive form in France, we wanted to kick off the new season with a bang.
“Having the Manchester Derby as our home opener was the perfect opportunity to play a game at the Etihad Stadium and welcome our seven Manchester City Lionesses home.
“We are delighted to have our new kit partner PUMA on board to build even more excitement around this historic game.”
Steph Houghton, Manchester City and England Lionesses captain, added: “We are all very excited to play our first home game of the season at the Etihad Stadium and, better yet, in a Manchester Derby.
“Big games like this are the ones you want to be in as a player and every one of us Manchester City players is looking forward to getting on that pitch and giving you all a performance to be proud of.”
