Republic of Ireland defender Megan Campbell has agreed a new one-year contract extension to stay with Manchester City until the summer of 2020.
Campbell joined the club in February 2016 and made 28 appearances.
She played a significant role in City’s 2017 Spring Series season and first FA Cup triumph in 2017.
Her time at the club has been blighted by injury, though, and she missed several months following a serious injury sustained in City’s Women’s Champions League game against LSK Kvinner.
She returned to action during the final months of the 2018/19 season – being named in the squads for both the Continental Cup and SSE Women’s FA Cup final winning games.
Megan Campbell with compete for a place in Manchester City’s defence next season
Competition to join captain Steph Houghton in the defence will be high following the departures of Jen Beattie and Abbie McManus.
The long throw specialist will wear the number 5 shirt formerly worn by Beattie for the forthcoming season having returned to fitness following rehabilitation.
Campbell could find herself competing with Gemma Bonner, Demi Stokes, Matilde Fidalgo, and Esme Morgan for a place in next season’s new look City defence.
She said: “I’m very excited to get going again, starting as a new player almost. I’ve been out for so long injured so I’m looking forward to the challenge.
“I’m looking forward to coming in and fighting for my place.
“My thoughts are to stay fit and healthy and push on from there.”
Nick Cushing, Manchester City women’s team manager, added:
“We’re really pleased Megan has signed a new contract.
“Having her back fit is like having a new signing.
“She has shown exceptional mental strength to have overcome two lengthy spells on the side lines.
“I have been inspired by Megan’s dedication and application, and look forward to her character and mentality pushing the team for the coming season.”
