OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0, FOREST GREEN ROVERS 0
Caretaker manager Pete Wild was indebted to goalkeeper Daniel Iversen for extending his unbeaten run in temporary charge to four games.
The Leicester City loanee made a string of super stops to deny League Two play-off team Forest Green Rovers at Boundary Park.
And Wild praised the never-say-die attitude and resilience of his team in grinding out a draw against Rovers who are now six games without defeat.
There was a homecoming for former players Carl Winchester, Joseph Mills, Gavin Gunning and Reuben Reid.
Latics, meanwhile, handed a debut to new-signing Mohamed Sylla who replaced Jordan Lyden who had returned to Aston Villa.
It was the one change from the side that started the Emirates FA Cup tie at Fulham.
Rovers almost took the lead minutes into the game as Nathan McGinley crossed for George Williams whose shot was tipped onto the bar by Iversen. Tahvon Campbell’s follow up was then cleared off the line by George Edmundson.
The visitors were enjoying large spells of possession which almost found a breakthrough as Campbell flicked it into the path of Williams, but he shot straight at Iversen.
Reece Brown then found himself running into Latics’ box and his shot cannoned back off both posts leaving everyone inside the ground questioning how it didn’t go in.
Latics eventually got a foothold of the ball with Gevaro Nepomuceno’s cross almost finding the net, but Rovers’ goalkeeper James Montgomery managed to claw it away from under his crossbar.
Mohamed Maouche then worked some space on the edge of the box before hitting a left-foot shot narrowly wide.
Chris O’Grady hit a shot over the bar before Iversen saved one on one from Williams as the teams went in level at half time.
Latics started the second half the brighter of the two teams as Nepomuceno crossed to Sylla who forced Montgomery into a save.
Some neat play from Latics set up Johan Branger-Engone, but Montgomery again saved with his feet.
Winchester then tried his luck from distance, but Iversen saved comfortably.
The game was petering out to a draw, but both teams created chances in the final 10 minutes.
Substitute Shawn McCoulsky had a shot saved by Iversen before Nepomuceno tried his luck from distance which was well saved by Montgomery.
Jose Baxter on his return from injury could have snatched the three points, but his effort was skied over the bar as the game ended in deadlock.
Pete Wild remains unbeaten in caretaker charge and next up for Latics is the trip to Macclesfield Town next Saturday.
