PLAYER RATINGS – Manchester City 6, Shakhtar Donetsk 0
Ederson: 7. Sticky early moment as he let a Junior Moraes chance slip out of his grasp before recovering. Great save from Yaroslav Rakitskyy’s free kick.
Kyle Walker: 6. Had to watch out for Taison when he went wide for Shakhtar so little opportunity to attack with Zinchenko on the other flank.
John Stones: 7. Tried plenty of long passes out to beat the Shakhtar press. A great understanding emerging with Laporte.
Aymeric Laporte: 7. Little to trouble him defensively.
Oleksandr Zinchenko: 8. Extra attacking option down the left with few defensive responsibilities. Set up Raheem Sterling’s wonder goal with a pass from deep in defence.
Bernardo Silva: 8. Great close control and diligent tracking back, Bernardo also tested Andriy Pyatov in the Shakhtar goal after nutmegging a defender and curled a deflected shot around the post.
Fernandinho: 7. Supplier of some great forward passes including one to Sterling which he won a penalty off.
David Silva: 8. Took over goalscoring duties with a tap in laid on by Riyad Mahrez and sparkled again in midfield before being given a well deserved rest ahead of the Derby.
Riyad Mahrez: 9. Skipped half hearted challenges to cross for David Silva to tap in the opener. Went close himself before converting Gundogan’s cross before winning the ball and setting up Gabriel Jesus’ hat trick.
Gabriel Jesus: 9. Scored a much needed goal after Raheem Sterling tripped himself up but then wasted a golden one on one opportunity when he hesitated and Pyatov made the save. He kept plugging away, though, and grabbed his hat trick – another penalty – and a delightful chip in injury time to make it 6-0.
Raheem Sterling: 9. Strong running, but will be embarrassed at the manner in which he won the penalty for Gabriel Jesus’ goal. His goal early in the second half showed his real talent. Was brought down by Matviyenko again in the Ukraine penalty area but the referee took pity on the Shakhtar defender. Ball almost broke to him in the area for a late sixth goal but the keeper got a hand to it.
Danilo (for Kyle Walker 60): 6. Little to do against demoralised Shakhtar
Gundogan (for David silva 73): 7. Exquisite cross for Riyad mahrez’s goal.
Fabian Delph (for Fernandinho 76): 6. Gave Fernandinho a breather.
