Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has signed a new one-year contract extension which will see him complete ten years at the club when his new deal expires in 2021.
Aguero is City’s all-time top goal scorer, with 204 goals, and now has almost three seasons in which to break more personal goalscoring records for City after signing from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
The Argentine striker would require just 62 more Premier League goals to join Wayne Rooney on 208 behind Alan Shearer’s towering achievement of 260 goals in 14 seasons.
The news comes shortly after City’s first defeat of the season – a 2-1 reverse in the Champions League against Lyon at home at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Commenting on the deal, Aguero said: “I am happy for this additional year. My idea was being here for 10 years. I’ve been here for seven years, it’s going to be 10 when the contract expires.
“This was the main reason I signed. I’m very happy because they have treated my very well since the first day I got here. I’m very happy with everything that involves the Club, my teammates, the staff and the management team.
“It’s true that we’ve got a lot of young talent, that in the future can make the difference. At the same time the youngsters are quite developed already, like Leroy [Sane], Raheem [Sterling], Bernardo [Silva] and Gabriel [Jesus].
“There are a lot of players, that have got things to improve and learn, but being in this Club you learn and improve faster than anywhere else.
“We have a good team, we need to be focused and if we are at 100%, we have lots of chances to do great things.”
Manchester City director of football, Txiki Begiristain, said: “We are delighted that Sergio is extending his stay at Manchester City.
“He has been so important to this Club since his arrival in 2011 and he remains at the forefront of what we are want to achieve in the coming years.
“We are fortunate to have had one of the best strikers in the world at our Club for so many years and I’m sure our supporters will be thrilled with this news.”
