Gareth Southgate has named his first England squad since the World Cup in Russia and Manchester United full back Luke Shaw was one of five changes ahead of their UEFA Nations League games against Spain and Switzerland.
The Reds full back has enjoyed a strong start to the season which seen him earn a recall, although fellow United player Ashley Young was left out of the squad while Phil Jones was injured in United’s 3-0 home defeat against Spurs and Burnley’s Nick Pope remains on the long term injury list.
Also missing were Gary Cahill and Jamie Vardy – both of the veteran players later announced that they were standing down from England duty though would remain available in case of injuries.
Southgate made five changes in all with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez – who missed the tournament through injury – joining Burnley defender James Tarkowski and Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana (who were both on the standby list for Russia).
They were joined by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy – who has never been capped despite being called up to England squads twice before – and Shaw.
There had been rumours that Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, and Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho would get a call up to the senior squad with England short of midfield creativity.
They could instead receive call-ups to Aidy Boothroyd’s U21 side.
