Manchester City’s women’s team have continued their recruitment drive this summer by securing the signing of Scotland international midfielder Caroline Weir from Liverpool Ladies.
Weir, who will turn 23 this month, has been capped 40 times for Scotland – scoring six goals – and will wear the number 19 shirt.
She was named Liverpool’s Player of the Year in 2016 after signing from Bristol and becomes City’s second signing of the summer following the announcement of the signing of Lauren Hemp yesterday.
Commenting on joining City, Weir praised City’s squad and the welcome she received from the club, saying:
“I’m really excited to be here. It’s a great club.
“I think they’re leading the way in the women’s game in so many different ways. I think there are so many great players here, it’s a challenge to compete for trophies and try to improve, it’s what brought me here.
“Every time I’ve played Man City, it’s always been a very tough game. They have so many good players, it’s great to be able to play with them now and I’m excited to go and challenge for the League and other trophies and hopefully we can be successful.”
She was also complimentary about the training facilities at Manchester City’s Football Academy and the prospect of playing European football, adding: “The CFA is very impressive. Everything is very professional, very well thought out and everyone’s very friendly as well, so I felt very welcome from minute one.”
“I’m looking forward to the Champions League. The team did really well last year getting to the semi-finals. It’s a great competition, it’s something you want to be a part of as a player.
As another forward thinking player on City’s roster, Weir described herself as an attacking midfielder who plays off a main striker, it’s another sign that City are aiming to overhaul their squad in a bid to win more silverware and challenge again for Champions League glory.
Both Weir and Hemp will have to provide stiff competition to Georgia Stanway, who earlier tonight won the FA WSL Goal of the Year, and Jill Scott who shared the FA WSL joint Player’s Player of the Year award with Birmingham City Ladies goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
