Nick Cushing has praised two players from his Manchester City Women’s squad who have been called up to the England squad recently and also promised that City would not take the foot off the gas tomorrow despite suggestions that he could field a rotated side with an overwhelming 5-0 advantage from the first leg against Norwegian side LSK Kvinner.
Noting defensive midfielder Keira Walsh’s first call up to England’s senior squad, Cushing praised her contribution towards City’s winning streak this term.
Cushing said: “Keira has been a consistent performer. It’s her first cap and she has to ensure that she continues to work hard and earn that chance to play again.
“She knows she has to push hard to become the player she could be.
“We hope they’ll get two more successful results to help them qualify for the next tournament.”
Walsh’s team mate Jen Beattie was in full agreement, adding: “She definitely deserves it. She’s been consistent all season and been one of our top players. He attitude towards training every day and her ability is incredible. I’m confident that she has the attitude and application to continue her international career.
Despite holding a 5-0 lead from the first leg, Cushing was keen to retain a strong side as he has done throughout their 100% start to the season in all competitions not just to foster correct competition for places but also to please the fans.
Ella Toone, Esme Morgan and Mie Jans could get opportunities to play but Cushing was adamant that consistency would be retained and competition for places to keep players on their toes as well as acknowledging the need to entertain the crowd.
“They’ll all be in the squad” revealed Cushing, who added: “We have a competitive squad and only have Tessel (Middag) and Pauline (Bremer) as long term injuries at the moment.
“I’m not a believer in rotating the squad just because you’re 5-0 up. It will be a very difficult game for us and we’ll put out a strong team out there not only to win the game but to make sure that the performance and result drives the crowds up.
One position which has seen some rotation this season, due in part to injury to Karen Bardsley, is that of goalkeeper.
Marie Hourihan and Ellie Roebuck have had game time this season but Cushing wanted to reiterate the need to have fit and in-form players to choose from after Bardsley was recalled to the England squad after her return from injury.
Cushing paid tribute to City’s England international, saying: “KB was our number one. She’s a top goalkeeper but the injury gave the others an opportunity. Ellie has really stepped up and has high potential to become a top goalkeeper.
“We want to make sure that we rehab KB so when the games do come thick and fast that the goalkeeper in the best form and fit will play.”
