Megan Campbell has confirmed her own worst nightmare following her injury during the second half of Manchester City’s Women’s Champions League game against LSK Kvinner at the City Football Academy yesterday.
The serious looking knee injury was a huge negative after City had fought back from going a goal down to win the game 2-1 and go through to the Quarter Finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League with a 7-1 aggregate win.
Her manager Nick Cushing said after the game that the team doctors would have to wait until the swelling on her knee went down but the news broken on Friday by City official Twitter was the worst possible.
Campbell later wrote on her Twitter: “Hard to put into words how I’m feeling right now other than truly devastated!
“This morning my worst nightmare was unfortunately confirmed… my ACL in my right knee has completely ruptured leaving surgery and a tough rehabilitation road ahead!
“It won’t be easy as injuries never are, nut I know that with the support of my family, friends, team mates, and all of Manchester City Women I will be back to play for both club and country very soon!
“I’ve done it before and I know I’ll do it again!
“Thanks for all the support and kind message I have received over the last day – it means so much!”
Campbell joins Tessel Middag and Pauline Bremer on City’s list of long term injures but reinforcements will be forthcoming in January with Julia Spetsmark and Nadia Nadim arriving at the club while Danish defender Mia Jans made her debut for the team as a late substitute.
The Irish international has been unlucky with injuries during her City career with an ankle ligament injury in March 2016 while on international duty, ruling her out for two months, only the start of a nightmare spell of injury after injury which kept her out of the City team until earlier this year.
