SWANSEA CITY 0, MANCHESTER UNITED 2
Two goals by Jesse Lingard saw Manchester United ease into the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Swansea City.
Both sides made changes for the Cup tie – there were seven changes for United, with Swansea making eight changes.
Jose Mourinho had lambasted his team after their defeat at Huddersfield and offered places in starting lineup at Swansea for two youngsters – Axel Tuanzebe and Scott McTominay along with places for Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Marcus Rashford, and Daley Blind.
The much-maligned Victor Lindelof also started despite his mistake costing United the winner for Huddersfield Town after Phil Jones went off injured, leaving United’s defensive resources stretched.
Mourinho expected a reaction and got one as his re-shaped United side easily won against Swansea.
It was comfortable stuff for United who cruised into the lead within 21 minutes after Ander Herrera’s pass was flicked on by Marcus Rashford to Jesse Lingard who confidently put the Reds in front.
It was only his second goal of the season, both now scored in the Carabao Cup, and three of his last four goals have been in the League Cup.
Lingard also brushed the side netting with an effort before heading his second of the night after a great cross by Matteo Darmian.
And the United forward could have had his hat trick but put a promising chance wide on his wrong foot.
The Swans barely tested United until a 74th minute effort from Tammy Abraham made Sergio Romero work to keep the clean sheet.
All too easy, then, for United who have a far trickier game on Saturday lunchtime against Spurs.
