Stuart Mathieson penned his last Manchester United match report in today’s Premier League win against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Mathieson is taking early retirement from his post covering the Reds for the Manchester Evening News for the past 22 years.
It was back in 1995 that Mathieson succeeded the legendary David Meek who began covering the Reds after the Munich air disaster claimed the life of former United correspondent Tom Jackson.
Indeed, Meek and Mathieson are the only two reporters to have covered United for the MEN since 1958.
And in his 22 years behind typewriter and laptop, Mathieson reported on 23 pieces of silverware being won in the most successful period in the club’s history.
Before today’s game there were two presentations, one by Sir Alex Ferguson on behalf of Manchester United and one by journalistic colleagues.
