John Sheridan has been sacked as Oldham Athletic manager following a miserable start to the season.
The club legend, who had saved the club from relegation in each of the last two seasons, paid the price for only one win in their first 11 league and cup games.
In each of the last two seasons, Sheridan was appointed in January with the club at the foot of Sky Bet League One only to pull off a great escape each time.
After being awarded a two-and-a-half year contract on his latest return, Sheridan lasted less than nine months with the team currently bottom of the table.
Assistant Tommy Wright has also been dismissed with first-team coach Richie Wellens taking charge of tomorrow’s home league game against Peterborough assisted by head of youth Tony Philliskirk, goalkeeping coach Carlo Nash and fitness man John Harbin.
The club statement read:
Oldham Athletic (2004) AFC Limited can confirm that first team manager, John Sheridan, has left the club by mutual consent.
The Board of Directors would like to place on record their thanks to John for his contribution to the development of the club, not only during this tenure, but as both a player and manager previously.
His impact over the past two seasons in particular, when he has saved the club from near certain relegation on both occasions, will mean he is always guaranteed a warm welcome here by both the club and fans alike.
This season, however, has not seen the progression we hoped with what was felt to be the nucleus of a good squad, and results, performances and league position have been hugely disappointing.
