Leroy Sane scored twice as Manchester City saw off a West Brom resurgence to secure a place in the Carabao Cup Fourth Round with a late winner.
Sane had given City a third minute lead but Claudio Yacob’s 72nd minute equaliser looked set to cause City boss Pep Guardiola problems before the German popped up five minutes later with the winner.
Yacob had already been responsible for a heavy challenge that forced Ilkay Gundogan off the pitch with a worrying looking injury after West Brom had been allowed to get away with some agricultural tackling on City players but the Argentine midfielder also scored for the home side.
Claudio Bravo, in goal for City, couldn’t prevent Yacob from volleying home through him from a West Brom set piece for the equaliser.
In contrast, Baggies ‘keeper Ben Foster had denied City a hatful of goals, with saves from Eliaquim Mangala and Raheem Sterling keeping West Brom in the game until Sane cut inside in the 77th minute and curled a fine shot into the top corner after being given the ball by Bernardo Silva.
James Morrison and Hal Robson-Kanu had already missed chances before Sane’s second goal and Robson-Kanu struck woodwork in injury time as the Baggies didn’t capitalise on the chances they created.
