Five English clubs will contest the group stages of the Champions League for the first time after Manchester United won the Europa League last season to qualify directly for the group stage despite finishing outside the top four last season.
And Liverpool joined the party after beating Hoffenheim in a play-off tie.
United have a relatively simple draw having squeezed into Pot 2 despite a patchy recent European record which was propped up by last season’s Europa League run. They will face Benfica, Basel and CSKA Moscow in Group A.
Manchester City will also be relieved to have avoided the big guns in Group F although they can’t relax against Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Feyenoord.
Champions Chelsea had the luxury of being a top seed and were placed in Group C alongside Atletico Madrid, Roma, and Qarabag (of Azerbaijan).
Liverpool’s first return to the Champions League group stage since 2015 was rubber stamped after they beat Hoffenheim in a playoff and they were in Pot 3. They will participate in Group E alongside Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor.
Tottenham, who were in Pot 3, have arguably the hardest group amongst the five English Champions League clubs and will face Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia in Group H. It will mean that Spurs old-boy Gareth Bale could line up for Real Madrid against them.
Celtic were in pot four and face an uphill task to qualify from Group B against Bayern Munich, Paris St Germain, and Anderlecht.
