Speaking on MUTV from Los Angeles, where United are currently on their pre-season Tour 2017, presented by Aon, Carrick said: “It’s such a huge honour to captain such a great club. I came as a 25 year old and never thought I could be here this long and achieve so much. I’m going to try and lead the boys and look after the young boys and guide them.
“I came to the club as a footballer and now I’m a huge fan and come to love the club over the years.
“To be in this position is very special for me.”
During his United career Carrick has played under hugely influential characters Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, and Wayne Rooney as well as being involved in England squads with captains such as David Beckham, John Terry and Steven Gerrard.
Michael Carrick vows to lead Manchester United by example
Asked about his own captaincy style, Carrick said:
“I’ll just be myself. I’m quite laid back and chilled out really. I will try and lead by example.”
Carrick also said on social media: “I’m privileged to be captain of this incredible football club. I love the place and I’ll give everything to achieve more success.”

Successive United managers after Sir Alex Ferguson have come to appreciate Carrick’s calmness in possession, ability to pick a pass, and flexibility – he has been played in central defence in key games where his height has been vitally important as the Reds lacked taller players in recent years during injury crises.
Romelu Lukaku deal confirmed by Manchester United
United have confirmed the signing of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku after apparently beating Chelsea to the punch with “best friend” Paul Pogba playing a big part in the big Belgian’s decision to move to Old Trafford from Everton.
Lukaku has signed a five year contract with the option to extend for a further year with Everton’s fee reportedly in the region of an initial £75m.
