WATFORD 0, MANCHESTER CITY 5
- Sergio Aguero ends the season with 33 goals, just 8 short of Eric Brook as all time top scorer for Manchester City.
- Also goals for Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus.
- Kevin De Bruyne finishes the season with 18 assists, 3 above Christian Eriksen.
- Walter Mazzarri names two goalkeepers on the bench in his final game in charge of Watford.
Manchester City finished third and qualified directly for the Champions League group stage with a resounding win at Vicarage Road against a hapless Watford side.
Pep Guardiola made just one change for City with Gael Clichy in for Aleksandar Kolarov and while departing Watford manager Walter Mazzarri made a point to the Watford board by naming two goalkeepers on the bench.
The City manager claimed his only regret wasn’t staying in the title race until the end, promising improvements next season after scoring 15 goals in their last four games of the season.
He said: “Our only regret was not fighting till the end. Finishing 15 points behind Chelsea, it’s a lot. We have to work harder [next season].”
There were goals for Vincent Kompany, a double for Sergio Aguero, Fernandinho, and Gabriel Jesus as they punished a Watford side in disarray.
Vincent Kompany set City on their way with a fifth minute goal from a free header from 12 yards out off Kevin De Bruyne’s corner after just four minutes.
It was the third goal in eight games for City’s captain since his return from injury.
De Bruyne was the provider again on the break sliding Sergio Aguero through for a finish across Heurelho Gomes from 15 yards out with just 23 minutes gone.
Aguero doubled his tally on 36 minutes when David Silva released Leroy Sane down the left.
Sane unselfishly squared the ball for Aguero and there was no mistake from the Argentine striker who sidefooted past Gomes to reach his highest seasonal goal tally at City of 33.
Fernandinho piled on the misery with a fourth goal in the 41st minute after exchanging passes with Gabriel Jesus and driving the ball past Gomes – only his third goal of the season and his first since a Champions League strike against Celtic last September.
Aguero squandered a great chance to get ever closer to Eric Brook as record City goalscorer by skewing wide with the goal gaping in front of him six yards out when Sane had delivered a left wing cross to him.
The Argentine did turn provider for Gabriel Jesus who make it five for City in the 58th minute when he skipped into the area onto Aguero’s pullback, juggled the ball into the area, and his lobbed shot crept under the bar despite Gomes getting something on it.
It was the seventh goal in 11 games for the Brazilian striker.
City showed dangerous intent for a tilt on the title next season, Aguero should have left Vicarage Road with the match ball, while Nicolas Otamendi helped Willy Caballero keep a clean sheet after he lashed the ball off the line when Watford tried to grab a late consolation goal.
