Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola will go head to head again at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup after the draw was made following tonight’s games.
Manchester United beat Northampton Town 3-1 at Sixfields Stadium while Manchester City beat Swansea City 2-1 at The Liberty Stadium to set up another mouthwatering instalment of the Manchester derby.
It will be an early chance for Mourinho to take revenge for the 2-1 derby defeat at the hands of Manchester City on September 10.
United ended a run of three straight defeats (at home to City and away to Watford in the league either side of Europa League away game at Feyenoord) to secure a 3-1 win at Northampton.
Jose Mourinho made nine changes to the United side which lost at Watford at the weekend with only Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling remaining in the side.
The Reds took an early lead at Northampton Town when Michael Carrick tucked away the loose ball from Rooney’s blocked free kick.
The United captain endured another frustrating night, with a goal ruled out for offside his most memorable work, as United’s forgotten midfielders Ander Herrera and Carrick shone.
Alex Revell’s penalty levelled the scores for the Cobblers before Herrera’s drive put the Reds back in front in the second half.
Marcus Rashford came off the bench and made sure of an easy win after Adam Smith’s howler left the in-form striker with an open goal.
City win Swansea Premier League dress rehearsal
Pep Guardiola also made nine changes from the side that thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 at the weekend but it was still a strong side that recorded a ninth successive win for Guardiola.
There’s no doubt that the changes will be rung again for City’s league encounter against Swansea but the change side was still enough to beat the Swans tonight.
Kelechi Iheanacho and Gael Clichy retained their places in the team and there was a first start of the season for captain Vincent Kompany, as City also handed full debuts to Angelino and Leroy Sane while highly rated 17-year-old Brahim Diaz came off the bench with 10 minutes to go.
Goals by Clichy (his second ever for City in six years) and Aleix Garcia (his first ever City goal) put Guardiola’s side in charge early in the second half.
Willy Cabellero twice denied Borja Baston either side of half time before Gylfi Sigurdsson scored an injury time consolation against City.
Kompany had left the pitch prior to Sigurdsson’s goal, raising further injury concerns and leaving City down to ten men, which would have caused Guardiola some concern, but the Belgian was later seen to be walking to the City bus without apparent discomfort.
