OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0, COVENTRY CITY 2
Oldham Athletic’s 2015/16 season ended with a whimper following a home Sky Bet League One defeat to Coventry City.
Goals from Romaine Vincelot and Adam Armstrong ensured the Sky Blues, who themselves have underachieved, finished their campaign on a high to delight their 782 travelling fans.
Oldham Athletic fell to defeat in the final game of the season against Coventry City.
There were starting spots for Carl Winchester and Dominic Poleon but it was otherwise a full-strength side as manager John Sheridan wanted to end the season on a winning note.
Sadly it was not to be as Latics ended the season with back-to-back defeats following their loss at Millwall the previous week.
Coventry had the first clear-cut chance of the game after 10 minutes when Jack Stephans volleyed wide at the far post from a corner.
And there was another let off when Armstrong’s free kick narrowly cleared the crossbar.
Latics gradually slipped into gear as Liam Kelly’s drive from 25 yards was not far over while Poleon crossed for Curtis Main who forced a decent save from keeper Reice Charles-Cook.
Main was thwarted for a second time by Charles-Cook while Brian Wilson cut in from the left and fired just wide.
Coventry had two chances to take the lead before half time as Armstrong knocked the ball past keeper Joel Coleman but Brian Wilson cleared the danger.
Armstrong again got beyond Coleman on the stroke of half time, but was forced wide. He did eventually cross into the box but George Thomas fired over the crossbar.
There was an end-of-season feel to the second half and it looked as though it was heading towards a goalless draw until the deadlock was finally broken by the visitors 15 minutes from time.
Coleman pulled off a superb save to deny Armstrong from five yards out, but from the resulting corner came the opening goal of the game as Vincelot headed home at the front post to nod the Sky Blues into the lead.
Five minutes later, Coventry City extended their lead as Armstrong scored his 20th of the season, firing low past Coleman to seal victory.
