Marcus Rashford and Daniel Sturridge were today named in England’s final 23 for Euro 2016.
Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater and Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend joined injured Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph as the three players to miss out as Roy Hodgson opted to select five strikers and only three central defenders for his squad.
Manchester United striker Rashford had just recently signed a new four-year contract with an option for a further year alongside his Reds team mate Cameron Borthwick-Jackson who agreed a deal of a similar length following the arrival of new boss Jose Mourinho.
In what has been a meteoric rise since his United debut in February, Rashford may only be fifth choice amongst England’s forward options but he has been included in the event that Sturridge is not fit to play and has already scored on his international debut for England.
Sturridge was included despite missing England’s last two friendly matches due to injury although he did take part in a training session on Monday.
England’s final warm-up match is against Portugal at Wembley on Thursday.
Their tournament football begins against Russia on June 11, before meetings with Wales on June 16 and Slovakia on June 20.
Wales manager Chris Coleman named Joe Ledley in his final squad less than a month after breaking his leg.
Coleman admitted that he didn’t know when Ledley would be available to play in France but waved away injury concerns over Gareth Bale who suffered cramp in last weekend’s Champions League final.
