MILLWALL 3, OLDHAM ATHLETIC 0
Manager John Sheridan intimated his side was already in flip flops in Tenerife following Oldham Athletic’s defeat at Millwall.
After the previous week’s home win against Crewe Alexandra guaranteed Sky Bet League One survival, this was an off-colour display in the wake of their recent excellent run.
The play-off bound Lions emerged emphatic winners thanks to goals from Byron Webster (2) and Shane Ferguson.
Sheridan made one change to the side which beat Crewe last weekend as Brian Wilson replaced youngster George Edmundson.
The goal sparked a positive response from Latics as Cameron Dummigan had his shot blocked while Jonathan Forte also saw a goalbound shot hit a Millwall defender and rebound out for a corner.
Steve Morison almost scored a second for Millwall after 19 minutes when he spotted keeper Joel Coleman off his line, but his effort from 50 yards landed on the roof of the net.
And the Lions had another great chance when Joe Martin’ free kick from outside the box hit the top of the crossbar.
With the half drawing to a close, the home side grabbed their second goal of the game. Morison crossed, Aiden O’Brien flicked the ball goalwards but Ferguson was alone at the far post to stab home.
Latics started the second half brightly and Jonathan Forte had two great chances to pull a goal back.
Firstly he met a Curtis Main header into the box but his shot from two yards was instinctively saved by goalkeeper Jordan Archer.
One minute later, Forte received the ball at the back post but he blasted over the crossbar.
Millwall almost scored a third five minutes after the restart when Coleman stood up well to deny full-back Mahlon Romeo.
Two minutes later, however, Millwall extended their lead further as central defender Webster scored his second of the game when a free kick was headed into his path and he made no mistake from six yards.
It was a remarkably open game as Taylor fired wide from 25 yards just after the hour mark, while at the other end, Forte headed over from inside the penalty area.
Sheridan made changes and brought on Carl Winchester, Mike Jones and Dominic Poleon and it would be the latter who should have pulled a goal back for Latics.
Poleon was presented with an opportunity from three yards out, but blazed over the crossbar.
Latics struggled to create chances, but Millwall continued to do so and Aiden O’Brien’s shot was well held by Coleman as they could have added a fourth goal.
