England captain Wayne Rooney has unspecified injury
Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey also doubtful
John Stones ruled out
Spurs duo Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend called up
Wayne Rooney is an injury concern for England as they prepare for their final two Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania.
The Manchester United and England captain missed training due to an unspecified injury picked up during United’s 3-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday and was joined on the sidelines by Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey who also have minor injury problems.
Ings had only just received his first call-up to the full national set-up on October 1 after scoring four goals in 13 U21 appearances.
Everton defender John Stones, who has not played since September 22, was ruled out with a knee problem which caused him to miss last weekend’s Merseyside derby.
Roy Hodgson had already said that Rooney was not guaranteed a starting role for the national team and, with Daniel Sturridge out, an England team unable to field Rooney or Ings either would look very experimental in otherwise winnable ties.
The England manager has called up Spurs duo Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend as cover, with Arsenal’s Theo Walcott set to deputise for Rooney and Townsend able to cover the wide positions if Walcott is used up front.
The Arsenal striker could be joined up front by Spurs striker Harry Kane or Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy if Hodgson went for an adventurous 4-4-2 formation.
The FA has said that the relevant players will be monitored by medical staff before Wednesday’s training session.
