David De Gea will be staying at Manchester United until at least the January transfer window after the bizarre collapse of a proposed move to Real Madrid.
United were understood to have agreed a deal worth around £29m to include Real Madrid ‘keeper Keylor Navas but a series of missteps and mishaps appear to have left Real with egg on their face after the deal unravelled.
In the aftermath of the failed transfer deal, Real released a statement about the aborted De Gea deal which was rebutted later by United.
Both sides blame each other for the failure to complete the deal, but United’s statement cast doubt on the transfer timings claimed by Real, who didn’t apparently make an offer for De Gea until lunchtime yesterday.
“Manchester United acts appropriately and efficiently in its transfer dealings. The club is delighted that its fan-favourite double Player of the Year, David de Gea, remains a Manchester United player.” concluded the statement.
Although he may be in Manchester for the moment, De Gea seems unlikely to sign any new deal to stay with United and if he doesn’t move on in January for a cut price deal, he can leave in the summer for free after the conclusion of his existing contract with the Reds.
The international break will allow De Gea to reflect on the events of the last few weeks and his manager Louis van Gaal, who declared that he wouldn’t play De Gea while the transfer window was open, must decide whether or not to hand the young Spaniard a first start of the season in United’s next game which is at Old Trafford against Liverpool on September 12.
Van Gaal’s decision may be made easier following the glaring errors made by Sergio Romero in the defeat against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.
United ‘keeper Anders Lindegaard has joined West Brom on a free transfer, signing a two year deal, which would leave the Reds with De Gea and Romero as senior ‘keepers with Sam Johnstone as third choice.
