England manager Roy Hodgson has named his England squad for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.
Commenting on his selection, Hodgson said: “This latest squad shows we are working with a good number of players with a claim to be England regulars and secure a place in Euro 2016.
“Before that there are two matches we must focus on. The players must keep going, play well and look to win every match. I don’t want any let up and we want to win both these games.”
Uncapped Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, 29, has been named in the 22 man squad. Heaton was once on the books of Manchester United but never made a first team appearance for the Reds although he has three U21 caps for England. Heaton had been previously called up to the senior squad this year for a friendly game against the Republic of Ireland and a Euro 2016 qualifying match against Slovenia.
Manchester City have three players in the squad, including first choice goalkeeper Joe Hart, plus new signings Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph.
Manchester United have four players in the squad, including captain Wayne Rooney, midfielder Michael Carrick and defenders Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling.
Rooney is on 48 international goals, just one behind Bobby Charlton’s all time record, and although he has been out of form in the Premier League recently, he did score a hat trick against Club Brugge as United qualified for the Champions League group stage this month.
Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was handed a recall after recent good performances including a winning performance against United at the Liberty Stadium today.
A number of players from the last squad are missing though injury, Jordan Henderson, Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck, and United defender Phil Jones are missing from the squad this time. Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, 28, has retained his place in the squad.
